Jérôme Romain
I try to represent my world as it is today, because my point of departure is automatically myself.
Jérôme Romain lives for fleeting moments, human behaviours and feelings that often pass us by in a flash. The selt-taught painter from Montpellier, France, photographs scenes such as these, but then does something markedly different with them. He painstakingly recasts them as oil paintings on canvas, creating hyper-realistic depictions of selfie-standard snaps, in a style inspired by the likes of Caravaggio and other classic masters. His images give a sense of history to the most contemporary of settings, and bring the technique of oil painting directly into the modern zeitgeist.
